Many years ago I heard a radio program with the Hungarian pop, something I barely knew existed. Wrote to the producer who sent two Hungarian LP. This was the start of many years of collecting vinyl records from obscure countries, mainly Eastern Europe and Asia. All imaginable and unimaginable music has a more or less steady flow reduced my living space, and now I no longer keep count of how many plates I have. It is from this record collection I have this will to review selected selection, both own favorites and more quirky and entertaining worth highlighting. This blog takes you on an unusual musical journey with strikes in everything from Latvian disco fuzzy, Taiwanese pop-prog and Romanian kitschpop. Yesterday it came in the mail a CD that I ordered colvanes a long time ago so it was a happy surprise. "Officium" with the Hilliard Ensemble. The CD I listened to the first time in November -97 at the home of Bridget. Oh what memories I have of the CD, and I was very fond of the disc already so it was about time it came to my collection.
I grew up in Arboga and it was a very good upbringing in every way. As my main interest has always been music and people were very good to grow up in a medium-sized city with fantastic music scene in the city churches. The Holy Trinity Church was Bridget Rosenquist-Nephew organist and I began seriously to invest in music when I was 14 years old, autumn -96. I practiced as often as I could in the church, I became assistant to Bridget, I started playing at church services, led children choir for 6-8 year olds and singing in two choirs, which was pretty much work with all the major works and passions. That I did not understand then, I thought that all churches had choirs singing such music (mostly sacred music from 1600 to 1700, much Anglican as well as much SE Bäck, B Samuelsson and the British, for example) as we did, I had nothing to compare with. I even thought that all churches around our country had organists as Birgitta, who led six choirs at a high level, which had about eight organ and piano students and played many church services and ceremonies. Now as an adult, I have worked a lot with not having her work situation ideal, it is verging on the inhumane.
Birgitta had, and has, quite matchless ability to get everyone to succeed. She can get everyone to learn to sing, she thinks at all, she gets people to grow and she sees all. In addition, she has a very big heart and she really likes those she meets. Over the years, became Birgitta a very important person for me as I had, and still have, the utmost respect for. She believed in me, she always gave me energy, and she made sure I was headed in the right direction. I had very poor self-esteem and did not understand how I could ever manage to become like her, ie a combined leader, organizer, motivator, planner and musicians colvanes at a really high level. I do not in any way claim that I have come up in her performance, but I'm well on the way and I'm so glad that I got to be one of her disciples. I have often thought that I should thank Bridget for everything she has taught me, and for that she has been at my side, last year or two ago, I called her big crying and just wanted advice in a tough position. As always, she gave me good advice and I immediately felt more at ease. I know that Bridget is happy for what she has learned and all her other students, she is one of those people who always says what she thinks colvanes and thinks, even if such she is happy and proud. A few years ago I was in Västerås Cathedral in a youth choir festival Bridget led. The church was also her two other former students Johan Hammarström (now assistant. Cathedral organist at the Cathedral) and Anna Ytterberg (cantor in Arboga today) and we all three church musicians stood and talked in the aisle when Bridget came walking toward colvanes us. When she saw us she shone up and said:
It is among the finest I have ever heard, we are students helped to berikahennes life so much that she could pull the wagon in a great music parish. I really should tell her how much she has enriched my life. Until then, I listen a few laps on the disc she let me discover almost exactly 12 years ago.
